Preformatted Text

Typographically, preformatted text is not the same thing as code. Sometimes, a faithful execution of the text requires preformatted text that may not have anything to do with code. Most browsers use Courier and that’s a good default — with one slight adjustment, Courier 10 Pitch over regular Courier for Linux users.

Code

Code can be presented inline, like <?php bloginfo('stylesheet_url'); ?>, or using jekyll’s highlight filter to highlight a block of code. Because we have more specific typographic needs for code, we’ll specify Consolas and Monaco ahead of the browser-defined monospace font.

Installing Netbeans in a VM

When using VMware you are allowed the option to share your folders with the host OS. Having a Windows VM will set the user’s home directory to ”\\vmware-host\Shared Folders” which allows the guest and host OS to share the documents, downloads, and desktop. This is a great feature but can sometimes cause issues when installing certain applications.

In my instance when trying to install Netbeans on my Windows VM I would receive an error: “Cannot create local directory: \vmware-host\Shared Folders.nbi” Fortunately for us, the Netbeans installer accepts some command-line arguments. We need to set the NBI Working Directory to something other than the default home directory. To do this we simply need to execute the Netbeans installer using the –-userdir argument.

<PATH TO NETBEANS INSTALLER EXE> --userdir "C:\Users\<YOUR USERNAME>"

If your folder in the Users folder has a space in it then make sure to put quotes around the entire file path to avoid errors.

Another tip/trick to quickly open up a new command prompt window and cd into a directory is to shift+right-click on the folder and click “Open command window here” from the context menu.

Add SASS Preprocessor to Netbeans 7.x

What this post will go over is how to set up SASS/SCSS support for Netbeans 7.x. In this example I am running macOS but the steps should be similar for Windows or Linux (other than file locations).

This article was written for Netbeans 7.X and below. As of Netbeans 8.0 and above they have added support for SASS and LESS natively! You do NOT have to follow these steps if you are using Netbeans 8.0 and above.

What you’ll need:

Netbeans 7.4
Ruby (this comes preinstalled on macOS)
Ruby Gems (also preinstalled on macOS)
SASS Gem

Installing Ruby and the SASS gem:

If you have not already please install Ruby Gems. If you are using Windows or Linux you will need to install Ruby first. If you are running Windows I suggest you use RubyInstaller.
After you install Ruby you’ll need to install the SASS gem. To do this, open up Terminal or if on Windows launch “Command prompt with Ruby” which is installed with RubyInstaller.
Type in gem install sass -V The -V flag will allow you to see what it is installing in case it hangs when doing so. After the gem installs it should output “1 gem installed.” And that’s it!

Setting Up SASS in Netbeans

Open up Netbeans (in this post I am using Netbeans 7.4 which natively supports SASS)
Open up the Preferences (on Mac go to the Netbeans Menu item and then Preferences)
Under the Miscellaneous section there will be a “CSS Preprocessors” tab. Go there
There will be a a text box for “Sass path”, this needs to point to the sass gem executable. This path will be different depending on what version of SASS and Ruby you have installed.

The SASS gem should be located here (on Mac using RVM):

/Users/your_username/.rvm/gems/<THE VERSION OF RUBY INSTALLED>/gems/sass-<VERSION OF SASS INSTALLED>/bin/sass

I suggest you uncheck the “Generate extra information (debug)” checkbox as to avoid littering your CSS files with debug lines.
Click OK and you’re done! Now all there is to do is use SASS!

Working with SASS in Netbeans

Open up a new project or existing one. Depending on your folder hierarchy you’ll need to have a ”css” and a ”scss” folder. These can go where ever you want and you can name them anything you want.
Once you make those two folders right click your project and go to Properties.
There will be a “CSS Preprocessors” section. Go there!
Here you will be able to select the ”scss” and ”css” folder. How SASS/SCSS works is you will only work in your scss file and when you save it will output to the css equivalent in the ”css” folder.

Other Cool Things You Can Do:

If you want SASS to minify your CSS output you can add –-style=compressed under the “Compiler Options” in your project properties window in the “CSS Proprocessors” section.

When you set the output the compressed SASS will strip all comments from the output. If you have various copyright and information comments you can use loud comments by using /*! comment here */ rather than just /* comment here */

Connecting to a Vagrant Box using SSH for FTP and MySQL

What this post will go over is how to connect to a FTP and MySQL server using a Vagrant environment provided by a PuPHPet VM.

What you’ll need:

Vagrant installed
A PuPHPet local VM set up (in this example I run CentOS 6.4)
a MySQL database management software (in this example I use MySQL Workbench)
a FTP client (in this example I use FileZilla)

Depending on your PuPHPet configuration your local VM IP address and MySQL username/passwords may be different. Connecting to FTP using FileZilla:

Host: Local VM IP Address (set in PuPHPet)
Protocol: SFTP
Logon Type: Normal
User: vagrant (the default username)
Password: vagrant (the default password)
Default remote directory: /var/www/html

Connecting to MySQL using MySQL Workbench:

Connection Method: Standard TCP/IP over SSH
SSH Hostname: Local VM IP Address (set in PuPHPet)
SSH Username: vagrant (the default username)
SSH Password: vagrant (the default password)
MySQL Hostname: 127.0.0.1
MySQL Server Port: 3306 (default MySQL port)
Username:root
Password: MySQL Root Password (set in PuPHPet)

By default the MySQL Hostname is set to 127.0.0.1, however if you need to find this address in case it is changed in your setup you can SSH into your Vagrant VM and use the following command:

cat /etc/my.cnf | grep bind-address
If the above file does not exist try:
cat /etc/mysql/my.cnf | grep bind-address
